Facebook Should the US do away with the Electoral College system?
Lincoln said it best: "...government of the people, by the people and for the people." By allowing the electorial college to continue we also allow the two major parties of the US to continue their outmoded method of government - which basically ties the people to choices only allowed by the parties.
Frankly the electorial college is nominated and elected by the parties - which eliminates the possibility of other parties making a change. (The good news is that media happily allows other party agendas to be talked about - the flip side of that however is that the media tends to focus on ideas that are popular or on personalities that are extreme.)
I think looking to the parties to tend to our best interest is like letting the wolf guard the sheep. Why would the parties nominate someone for the electorial college that would vote as faithless? Why would the parties even consider giving up the power of hedging their bets? I would argue that a number of politicians are interested in maintaining their jobs - wouldn't we all? The want to make sure they can control the money and power that comes with it to continue to keep employed. If the process were turned willy-nilly to popular vote they could not trust the populist to vote other than just based on popularity.
This is a very, very frustrating topic.
